Contemporary Music

My contemporary music has Afro-American roots but at the same time is influenced by various 20th Century composers. Ives, Varese, Ginastera, Bartok, Scriabin, Sorabji, Stravinsky, Gershwin and Bernstein, just to mention a few.

As a pianist I have written until now 69 sonatas and 17 piano concertos. In 2000 I have written for Fred Wesley, based on a 21 bar fugue, a 16 minute orchestral variation. In Cologne on the 30th of April, 2005 the premiere of my 8th Symphony was heard, under the direction of Michael Willens and the Damals and Heute, Orchestra on WDR Radio. Since then I has written in total 39 Symphonies as well as many concertos for solo instruments and works in various Third Stream styles.

On the 19th of May, 2007 the Süddeutsche Philharmonie of Constance and my Quartet played the premiere of my Hard Bop Concerto for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra. As well on September 15th, 2007 my Suite for Danton’s Tod for Soloists, Choir and Orchestra was premiered with the Würzburg Philharmonic and Choir with Ulrich Pakusch as conductor.

In January 2011 there was a chamber concert, in Würzburgs Mainfranken Theater, of three songs set to the poetry of Marianne Dora Rein with Milena Ivanova playing cello and Katia Bouscarrut on piano. In both years 2011 and 2012 I have performed with my Third Stream Quartet „Jazz with Strings“ in various concert halls throughout Europe. In 2013 there was the premiere of my Progressive Rock-Jazz Group setting the lyrics of Roland Schimmelpfenning’s  Version of Alice in Wunderland in the German language to music. Since then Paul has been on tour with the James Brown Brass and has developed his own Quartet and Quintet performing compositional Hard-Bop Jazz as well as composing many new contemporary chamber and orchestral works.  His book “Symmetrie as the Fundament of Sound Creation” will be released from the Schott publishing house as of January 2018.
